WINES

Bill's Picks

Now that the 2021 harvest is put to bed, my staff asked me to rummage through our winery cellar and select six limited wines that I thought reflected our winemaking philosophy of extended aging in the bottle or our complete élevage (raising of the wine from tank aging, to barrel aging, to bottle aging in a temperature-controlled warehouse. I found some REAL treats to talk about in my notes below. All the wines are available for purchase individually or as a sampler 6-Pack.

Happy Holidays!

Tasted like a three year-old white wine. It is floral, and fresh and bright in flavor. The give away here for its age is perhaps the delicious, creamy, mouth-filling texture, that is set-off by brisk acidity. 2011 was a very cool year. These grapes were harvested on October 17th, October 29th, and November 2nd.

Lemony; lemon-leaf, lemon balm, and almond blossom in the nose. Lingering, long, and mouth-coating. Delicious now! We will drink several bottles over this Holiday Season as an antidote to Chardonnay!

This is Zinfandel as cru Beaujolais! I squeezed this wine on to my list because it is so easy and fun to drink! Serve it slightly cool, the way you would other lighter reds. We had bottles open on Thanksgiving Day and it quickly disappeared. If you are thinking about red wine but you don’t want anything too heavy, try this wine. Use it where you might normally go for a Pinot Noir. The nose is not as unassuming as you would think. This wine has complex aromatics of violet and lavender, and savory notes of wild, Zinny berry fruit, mountain sage, and yerba buena. These flavors are partially derived from the fact that it was fermented whole-cluster! It is refreshing and revitalizing.

One of California's original Southern Rhône-style blends, L'Autre is hand crafted from varietals nurtured in the rocky terroir of the Sierra Nevada of California.  It is luscious, elegant, silky, and complex.

Has a whiff of campfire smoke and smoked meat that jumps out of your glass. Then Damson cherry and rhubarb fruit laced with cinnamon and white pepper; flavors of beef stock or broth; savory, wild, with exotic black tea and cherry flavors. There is a lot of complexity here for those that love traditional Provençal reds.

A classic Cabernet Sauvignon. Blind, many have suggested it is a cru from the Medoc. Nose: cedar, tobacco, graphite, tar with tart and savory blackberry fruit. This is a typical classic, old-school, Cabernet Sauvignon with a bit more structure and fine-grained tannins - remember this is from the cool, cool, 2011 vintage! It is forward and generous and not astringent in any manner in the finish. Short supply!

Has ripe blackberry flavors that suggest spiced plum, black pepper in a well-balanced fashion. 2001 was a warmer than average year in the Shenandoah Valley and this vintage of our TOP Zinfandel bottling comes across as a more elegant Amarone, than a Piedmontese red. There is a nice equilibrium between the wine's dry finish and the developed fruit flavors of dried plum and Damson cherry. The wine's aromatics hint at fennel, tar, tobacco, and cedar as it opens up in the glass, and toward drinking temperature after about fifteen minutes from cork pull. This is a restrained, and dry red with great acidity that would be a wonderful accompaniment with an osso buco or a Stilton cheese plate.
